Research Summary
My major geographic interest is Mesoamerica and the Southeastern Maya frontier where I have had field experience in Guatemala, Honduras, and El Salvador. I specialize in the study of production and distribution of archaeological ceramics and the economic organization of complex societies. I have cooperated with Dr. Ronald L. Bishop at the Smithsonian Natural History Museum on a number of projects involving Instrumental Neutron Activation Analysis (INAA) of various sets of archaeological ceramics focused on different questions related to production and distribution.
In an attempt to aid archaeological ceramic specialists understand more about the production aspects of pottery-making I coordinate the Institute’s Ceramics Research Group that sponsors at least one event each quarter that frequently is a pit-firing where observers can see the timing and temperature characteristics of this traditional technique. My mailing list for the widespread informal group contains over 125 names from five colleges and universities in the Southern California area.
Soon I will resume reclassifying the pottery collection from the Morett Site in West Mexico that was excavated by UCLA in 1959 and 1961.
