Research Summary

The ancient Maya city of Xunantunich sits on a hilltop in the west-central area of Belize at the western end of the Belize River Valley, overlooking Mopan River. Dr. Richard Leventhal mounted a major archaeological project there in 1992. Survey and excavations over the course of three seasons have revealed much new information about the history of this city which was established in the waning years of the Late Classic Period (ca. AD 700). The primary responsibility of my project at Xunantunich was the iconographic analysis of stucco frieze remnants which once wrapped around the largest and most imposing building at the site, the four-sided Structure A-6.
