Research Interests

Roman art and archaeology, the archaeology of non-elites, the archaeology of gender, Latin epigraphy, and historical and Roman slavery.

Research Summary

Professor McDonnell is an archaeologist interested in various aspects of ancient world, particularly the material culture and archaeology of the Roman Empire. She co-directed field excavations in Italy, and excavated across the Roman Empire. Her research interests include Roman tombs, the archaeology of non-elites, the archaeology of gender, Latin epigraphy, and historical and Roman slavery. Her current project is a book on Roman tombs and the construction of social identities.
