The island of Aegina 20 miles south of Athens in the Saronic Gulf was an important city-state (polis) from prehistoric times until the Classical period when it was destroyed by the Athenians at the beginning of the Peloponnesian War (431 B.C.). The talk will give an overview of the archaeology of the island summarizing the excavations in the main sanctuary of Aegina dedicated to Zeus and survey work throughout the island to show the infrastructure of the ancient polis, including roads, walls, farmsteads, quarries, and sanctuaries.
