This talk reflects on a collaborative project that seeks to bring postcolonial studies and queer theory to bear on the archaeology of colonialism. Incorporating archaeological research on prehistoric, classical, and modern empires across the globe, this project demonstrates that the materiality of sexuality to develop new archaeological vantage points on the intimate encounters of empire. My own research on Overseas Chinese settlements in 19th century California provide one example of how the weight of imperial institutions bore down hard on the affective relationships of those subject to colonial rule, and how subaltern communities responded to these conditions with creativity.
