INFORMATION FOR PROSPECTIVE STUDENTS
The Program is ideally suited for students who wish to combine more than one academic department for the study of the human past. Applications are especially encouraged from students whose interests may form bridges among the humanities, social sciences and physical/biological sciences. As graduate school contains a strong apprenticeship component, students should identify and contact faculty with whom they would like to work. Students should consult the list of archaeology Core Faculty who supervise thesis research, as well as the list of Affiliated Faculty who serve on committees and whose courses will also be of interest to Program students.

For the UCLA course catalog, please see the http://www.registrar.ucla.edu/catalog. For current course offerings, please see http://www.registrar.ucla.edu/schedule.
Competitive funding for graduate study in UCLA’s Interdepartmental Archaeology Program is provided through the University’s Graduate Division as well as through funding generously provided by the Cotsen Institute of Archaeology. Students may also be supported through teaching assistantships in campus departments, providing students with valuable experience that will assist them in developing their own scholarly careers. Competitive funding is also available to students who wish to pursue specialized laboratory training in other campus or off-campus venues for the purposes of their dissertation research. Additional competitive
funding is also available to entering students;
for further information see http://www.gdnet.ucla.edu/asis/entsup/fellgrnt.htm. Students are particularly encouraged to apply for support through the competitive NSF and Javits fellowship programs.
Foreign students are encouraged to learn about and apply for Fulbright funding from their country of origin. The Fulbright program is designed for foreign students to attend graduate programs in the United States. Click here for the Fulbright web site. Please keep in mind that the deadline to apply for Fulbright may be much earlier than the deadline for the application to the Archaeology Program.
ADMISSIONS
The deadline to submit your complete application for the 2008-09 academic year is December 15, 2007.
Any undergraduate major may be considered for admission to the Program. Students should consider and demonstrate why they wish to pursue interdisciplinary training in archaeology at UCLA, and indicate the specific fields in which they plan to undertake research. Please note that we only admit students for the Ph.D., with the understanding that the student will earn the M.A. as a component of their studies (currently, within 2.3 calendar years). As the program requires all students to take a year-long core seminar series starting in the Fall quarter, we admit students only on an annual cycle; thus attention to the application process is essential. The following documentation is required and must be submitted before your application can be reviewed:
- APPLICATION FOR GRADUATE ADMISSION
Please apply online: https://www.gradadmissions.ucla.edu/newapp/ Note: In response to the question, "Name of Department or School which offers the program" indicate "Archaeology (Interdepartmental) Program."
- STATEMENT OF PURPOSE AND PLAN OF STUDY
The tone and content of the statement should be professional rather than autobiographical. Applicants should explain what prompted them to continue studies in this field and what kind of training and experience prepared them for the studies. Each applicant is requested to submit a detailed plan of study that should include an outline of projected course work and a general indication of topics that the applicant would want to pursue for an M.A. and for the Ph.D.
- LETTERS OF RECOMMENDATION
Three letters of recommendation are requested from individuals known to the applicant in a professional capacity. Usually this means faculty and research supervisors who would be able to assess the candidate’s suitability for graduate work.
- SAMPLE OF SCHOLARLY WORK
Applicants must supply some evidence of previous research which may be in Archaeology or in some other field relevant to the applicant’s interest in the Ph.D. program. This may be in the form an Honor’s thesis, one or more course papers, or publications. The admissions committee, consisting of Program faculty members, will assess the applicant's writing skill as well as her/his ability to work with data and ideas in a creative, scholarly, ethical and scientific manner. Should the applicant be accepted to the Program, this material will be retained in the student's file here at UCLA.
- A GENERAL GRADUATE RECORD EXAMINATION (GRE) REPORT
The results of the GRE (Verbal, Quantitative, and Analytical) will serve as one of many parameters in determining the academic potential of applicants. To register for the GRE exam please go to www.gre.com. (School code: 4837, Dept. code: 1702)
- OFFICIAL TRANSCRIPTS (in duplicate)
If transcripts are not in English, an authorized English translation must be provided.
