Friends of Archaeology
![]() Did you see the Tutankhamen exhibit at the art museum in Los Angeles, and you are interested in learning more about pharaohs? Or perhaps you visited the pyramids at Giza or Teotihuacan, and you might want to learn more about Ancient Egyptian culture or about the prehistory of Mexico? Or perhaps, you have visited the tomb of the first emperor of China with its terra cotta warriors and horses, and you might like to hear about the history and architecture there? UCLA Friends of Archaeology offers a comprehensive range of opportunities for all those interested in the many aspects of archaeology. The FoA is a recognized university support program affiliated with the Cotsen Institute of Archaeology at UCLA. The founding purpose of FoA is to raise funds to provide grants to UCLA graduate students and to support of activities of the Institute. This financial support from FoA is accomplished with very little administrative expense. The FoA also provides volunteer help for field and laboratory projects affiliated with the Cotsen Institute. FoA members have also joined various excavations in Canada, Peru and Panama. Come join us and experience these Benefits: Newsletter Friends of Archaeology Newsletter are published quarterly. This brings you up-to-date information on all FoA activities, public and private lectures and field trips, UCLA classes, and events of archaeological interest in the Los Angeles area. Cotsen Institute of Archaeology at UCLA Publications BACKDIRT is the semi-annual publication of the Institute. This is sent as a benefit of basic-level membership. At higher levels of membership a 20% discount is given on Cotsen Institute of Archaeology at UCLA publications. Public Lecture Public lectures held at the Harry and Yvonne Lenart Auditorium of the Fowler Museum, sponsored by the Cotsen Institute of Archaeology at UCLA, are partially financed by FoA. Field Trips Field trips sponsored by the FoA include Docent-led museum tours, day trips to local sites, day sight seeing trips, weekend excursions. Special Events The FoA sponsors two membership parties each year. The annual Christmas party and an annual Pre-Colombian potluck dinner in June provide the opportunity for members to meet in an informal setting. Other events include the FoA Symposium, which features graduate students and faculty presenting their current research, and informal lectures from University faculty and graduate students at FoA home meetings. Volunteer Opportunities The Cotsen Institute of Archaeology at UCLA supports a publication unit, various research laboratories and research centers on the UCLA campus. The laboratories provide analysis of archaeological material. Examples of activities of the laboratories include the identification and analysis of plant remains, of bones from archaeological projects, analysis of ceramics and stone tools, Fowler Museum Archaeology Collection and a center for the study of rock art. The Research Centers are oriented to various areas of the world such as Egypt, Peru, Asia, Mesoamerica and Channel Islands. Volunteer opportunities under the guidance of Institute faculty provide an exploration into the world of archaeological science. Field opportunities are available to members who have gained recognition for their serious interest in archaeology. Student Fellowships Fellowships provide grants to assist UCLA graduate students to carry out field research all over the world. These grants are awarded by a committee of faculty and board members of the FoA. As of January 2002 FoA has awarded over $188,000 in fellowships. This past summer students traveled to Chile, Turkey and Peru and FoA provided financial assistance.
