Since its conception in 1973, Backdirt has seen major changes to its design, but the mission has ultimately remained the same: to highlight the research and activities of the Cotsen Institute of Archaeology. Winter 2006
  • Backdirt serves no longer as a newsletter alone—the 68-page, full-color Backdirt is now an Annual Review that serves to expose the fascinating news, research and activities at the Cotsen Institute of Archaeology at UCLA
Spring / Summer 2005
  • Backdirt is in full-color throughout all its 12 pages
Fall 2003 / Winter 2004
  • The 12-page issue exhibits full-color covers and heavier, glossy paper
Fall / Winter 1999
  • The 12-page issue features the current institute name, Cotsen Institute of Archaeology, and logo (called IA Version 2)
Winter 1992
  • The 12-page issue is in 2-color format for the first time, and it features a different logo, which is a representation of Tintagel Maze, Cornwall, England
Spring 1987
  • Backdirt gets a new logo that features an archaeologist screening
Spring 1986
  • The first issue of the newsletter to use the current title, Backdirt, was released, with a tagline of “The Nitty Gritty of Archaeology at UCLA”
  • The 12-page issue also featured a new logo called IA version 1, which alludes to rock art
April 1973
  • First issue of the institute newsletter released
  • Only 4 pages long, the black and white newsletter featured a logo of a soapstone sculpture—a killer whale effigy manufactured by the Chumash or Gabrielino Indians
