IN MEMORIAM
Pat Campbell Healy
Publications mourns its mainstay
by Brenda Johnson-Grau
IN JULY THE PUBLICATIONS UNIT lost Patricia Campbell Healy, a volunteer who came in faithfully twice a week for nearly twenty years. A true friend and a perspicacious advisor, Pat reminded us all how important it is to listen attentively-to our fellows and to the text. She was a talented and dedicated editor, and everything she worked on-whether book, brochure, or article in Backdirt-was vastly improved.
Arriving punctually at 9, she would chat briefly, then settle down to her desk and quietly start work. Within minutes, the grumbling and groaning would begin. An editor passionately engaged with the text, Pat audibly vented her displeasure with sloppy diction, misplaced modifiers, or poorly expressed argumentation. Her orneriness was somehow endearing, but it also kept us all on our toes. It was always comforting to know that she was there, absorbed with all her being in the editing process, never satisfied with anything less than perfection.
I will miss Pat's sly wit, her kindness, and her ready ear and I will long envy her never-flagging enthusiasm for editing bibliographies, but my greatest sorrow is that she cannot edit this for me.
