Please join us for a public lecture and photo exhibition on the New Acropolis Museum.

Speakers: Professor Dimitrios Pandermalis (President, Organization for the Construction of the New Acropolis Museum) and Bernard Tschumi (Architect), with remarks by D. Caramitsos-Tziras (Consul General of Greece) and John K. Papadopoulos (Professor and Chair of Classics, UCLA)

Lecture is co-sponsored by the Consulate General of Greece in Los Angeles, the Cotsen Institute of Archaeology at UCLA and the UCLA Classics Department.

Free and open to the public. The lecture is from 6:30-8:00, followed by a reception.

Parking is available for $8.00 in Lot 4. Enter UCLA from Sunset Blvd. at Westwood. Drive ahead to the Parking Information Booth in Lot 4. Convenient Fowler parking is at the northeast or southeast ends of Lot 4, where automated pay stations accept $1 and $5 bills and credit cards. The parking fee is a maximum of $8. The Cotsen Institute of Archaeology at UCLA will open its doors for the 12th annual Open House. This tradition gives the general public, school children, students and interested individuals an opportunity to see what happens after the surveys and excavations from various parts of the world are over, how the analysis is performed and how the data are stored for research, lectures and publications.

Lectures by UCLA archaeologists will be presented in the Lenart Auditorium:

1:30 p.m. “Among Stone Giants: Archaeology and Exploration on Easter Island” Jo Anne Van Tilburg, Ph.D.Director, Easter Island Statue Project; Research Associate, CIoA.

2:30 p.m. “Sorcerers of the Fifth Heaven: Ancient Nahua Art and Ritual of Southern
Mexico” John Pohl, Ph.D. Curator of the Arts of the Americas, Fowler Museum.

3:00 p.m. “The Prehistory of Bocas del Toro, Panama”
Thomas Wake, Ph.D. Director of Zooarchaeology Lab, CIoA.

Tours to the Fowler Museum will be given at 2:00 p.m. and 3:30 p.m. (meet on first floor of the museum).

There will be a children’s corner, multimedia presentations of archaeological sites, and the Experiential Technologies Center will present interactive virtual reality models of the Roman Forum, Basilica Maxentius and Karnak.

An essential ingredient in any scientific endeavor is the sharing of one's ideas with colleagues and the public. The Cotsen Institute of Archaeology at UCLA has an active, ongoing lecture program that affords scholars at UCLA and from around the world opportunities to present new research. In addition, short courses and seminars offered by Institute faculty and visiting scholars also enhance communication and interaction among scholars in the profession.

One of the Institute's primary goals is that of outreach through both media and community involvement. Outreach activities such as public lectures inform and inspire the public about the exciting archaeological discoveries UCLA scholars are making, and interpret their significance for the collective study of civilization.

The Institute offers a free public lecture series of approximately twelve lectures and seminars each year. In addition, the Institute sponsors special programs which in past years have focused on the archaeology of such areas as Australia, Polynesia, India, South East Asia, Mesoamerica, California and Africa.
